Ernest H. Robl's photographs capture the dynamic aspects of travel and transportation. His location images provide a strong sense of place. His writing opens the door to experiences and places around the world, as well as to a range of technical subjects.
I am an experienced professional journalist (both photographer and writer) specializing in transportation and travel subjects, with a special emphasis on railroads. In addition, my stock photo file contains substantial general coverage of North Carolina and Virginia as well as several European countries. (Austria is a major stock photo and writing specialty.)

Whether you are involved in the global marketplace and need to understand why intermodal transportation makes sense, or whether you just want to know more about freight transportation technology and how goods get from one part of the world to another, this is a book for you.
One of the most important chapter in the book looks at issues that inhibit efficient intermodal transportation, and what can be done to refocus American transportation policy in this area.
You've discovered that you like trainsand that you're not alone. Lots of other people also like trains, and they all appear to know much more about trains than you do.
Here's an introductory work that will help you catch up with a better understanding of railroad equipment, operations, and infrastructure. And, especially for railfans, chapters focus on railroad travel, photography of railroads, modeling railroad operations, and collecting railroad artifacts. Even if you just like to go out and watch trains, this book will help you better appreciate what you are watching.

- This self-paced workshop is presented in 20 sessions (or chapters) with a range of "homework" exercises to try out the new information, as well as dozens of brief sidebars with technical and practical information..
- The book helps you explore the possibilities of photography as they relate to subjects you are interested in photographing.
- Pages on this site include a comprehensive outline / table of contents as well as sample chapters.
- This book describes more than 200 famous North American railroad sites and routes.
- It is a vital source of information for railfans, railroad historians, railroad photographers, railroad travelers, and anyone else interested in railroads.
- In addition, the book serves as a specialty index to a large number of recent magazine articles about the locations cited.
